Animal Control

1. How do I report animal problems in my area?

If you live in the City limits please call (660) 679-6131 to report problems.

2. What do I do when a dog or cat bites or scratches?

Contact your family doctor or go to the appropriate medical facility for treatment.

Call Animal Control at the Police Department at (660) 679-6131.

If the animal is wild, Animal Control officer will set a trap. If the animal is domesticated, Animal Control officer will check with the owner to determine if the animal is current on its rabies vaccination.

If the animal is not current on its rabies vaccination, it will be transported to a licensed vet for a 10-day observation. If the animal has to be killed, the head will need to be sent off for rabies testing.

3. How do I know if my animal has been picked?

You can call the police department at (660) 679-6131 and talk to the animal control officer or you can look under the animal control impounded animal page on this website and see if your animal has been picked up.

New Construction building permits are based on square footage and structure.
Remodling Building permit fees are based on the project amount. In addition to the building permit fee, plan review fees and issuance fees can also be charged.

2. I am a construction contractor, am I required to register?

All contractors are required to be registered with the City and pass a test and pay annual fees.

1. Can I remain anonymous when reporting a code enforcement violations?

Yes. We do not require that you provide any personal information. Remember that all information you choose to provide to the City, including names, phone numbers, or email addresses, is subject to the Public Record Laws. In other words, we must provide this information to anyone who asks for it. If you wish to remain completely anonymous, do not provide your personal information.

2. What is an abandoned or unserviceable vehicle and why are they considered to be a violation of City Codes?

The City Ordinance describes an unserviceable vehicle as any vehicle which is required to be licensed and registered and is not licensed and registered and is in such condition that it cannot be started or moved under its own power without repair. Derelict vehicles typically leak fluids such as anti-freeze, gasoline and other automotive fluids onto the ground, contaminating the local area.

These vehicles also create an attractive nuisance to children by presenting an enticing, but dangerous, plaything. There are several documented incidents of children becoming locked inside a vehicle and succumbing to the extreme temperatures produced within the vehicle. Inoperative vehicles also detract from neighborhoods appearance and can invite an undesirable element into your community.

3. What do I do if I've received a notice of violation from Code Enforcement?

If you have any questions about what is required of you to achieve compliance with City Code Enforcement, please contact the investigator assigned to your case. The investigator’s name is listed at the bottom of the notice you received.

The goal of Code Enforcement is to preserve the quality and value of public and private property and maintain a high standard of living by eliminating conditions that threaten the life, health, safety, and general welfare of the public. The City recognizes that this goal is most effectively achieved through the education of, and cooperation with, the citizens of the City.

4. What happens if I am found guilty?

When a property is found to be in violation at a code enforcement hearing, an Administration Order is issued, stating the case facts and giving the violator time to come into compliance with said ordinances. If the property is not brought into compliance within the time ordered, a the City may commence cleanup and removal of the violation. The cost for the cleanup and removal may be recorded and will constitute a lien against the property in violation.

If the property owner is issued a citation for the code violation the fine will continue to run daily until the property is brought into compliance. Once compliance is achieved, the fine will stop increasing, but the fine total, which is a lien, remains against the property until satisfied.

5. How much are Code Enforcement fines?

The amount of the fine is determined by the Code Enforcement Board and can range up to $500 per day for each day that the violation continues to exist. In the case of repeat violators, a fine which has continued to accrue for 30 days is forwarded to the Civic City Attorney’s Office for possible legal action.

1. How do I pay a ticket or fine?

Fines are due in full on the day of sentencing. The Butler City Municipal Court accepts cash, check, money orders, and cashier's checks. For more information, please visit Payment Options.

2. What happens if I fail to appear in court as ordered?

If it's an initial arrangement the court will send out a Summons with a new Court Date. If not an initial arrangement the court will issue a warrant for your arrest. For more information or if you have questions, please contact us at (660) 679-6465.

3. How do I get restitution?

If restitution is ordered by the court, it will be collected through the court and when paid in full a check will be issued by the City Clerk to the Victim.

Zone changes requires Planning Commission review and the approval of the City Council.

Applications to change zoning maybe submitted to the City Administrations Office. Public Notice is required for zoning changes.

First, determine the zoning district your property is located in by checking the City's zoning map or calling the City Administration Office at (660)679-4182.

Next, look up the permitted uses for your zoning district. If your use is not listed in the permitted use section, check the conditional use section to determine if your use requires a Conditional Use Permit.

1. How do I file a report with the police department?

The police department will take reports in person by calling us to come to your residence or you coming to the polce department. We take reports in person to help maintain the credibility of the report. An officer can be dispatched to your residence or location by calling (660) 679-6131 if your report is an emergancy please dial 911.

You may receive a copy of a report at the Butler Police Department, there is a $5.00 fee per report.

3. I received a ticket can I pay at the police department?

No, the police department can not take your payment for court. You will have to contact the court clerk, at Butler City Hall or by calling (660) 679-6465.

4. I need to be fingerprinted, where can I go to do this?

You may come to the police department and be fingerprinted. There is no fee to be fingerprinted for jobs and ect. Bring the fingerprint cards with you if you have them.
